SUSPENDERS & SOCK GARTERS

In their current form, suspenders (also known as braces) were invented in the mid-1820’s. Due to the high cut of men’s trousers at that time, suspenders became very popular as a practical way for a gentleman to keep his pants positioned correctly above his waist. During World War I suspenders lost popularity as men became more accustomed to wearing belts with uniforms. However, suspenders are a favorite of many distinguished gentlemen, still today.

Sock garters served a very practical function when invented in the eighteenth century. Prior to the advent of elastic, sock garters were essential for keeping one’s socks up.
